Day 1 – London Eye to Newhaven

You can download the route from Ride with GPS, in various formats to suit your navigation method.

Don’t be put off by any steep looking climbs, it just looks worse because of the total daily distance. Look on the gradient % overlayed on the elevation graph.

I am planning the same trip for the middle of May 2017. We will be catching the train with our bikes and fully loaded panniers from the South west into London so will not have time on the first day to get all the way to Newhaven. Is the route from London easy to follow and where would be a good place to end our first day, we plan to do about 20 miles that day. Thanks for any advice you can provide.

Hi, I guess it depends on how late you’ll be getting into London. If you left London by 2pm you’d have way enough time to reach Newhaven, it’s 60 miles, so even at 10mph it’ll take 6 hours riding. The route is easy if you go for the same sort of navigation we did, alternatively you’ll possibly get lost and cover more miles if you’re anything like the many others I’ve come across who tried it with a book or paper map. You might be best to cycle to outside the M25 and stop if you have to, Bletchingly has places I think, to be honest I didn’t look for places on this stretch. Feel free to ask anymore questions especially as I did the trip again in 2016.

    Hello,

Myself and a friend are doing this cycle in August and we’re hoping to do a scenic/ pretty route. Was this part of the route pretty/ quiet roads or was it all mainly very busy roads? Also did you use your phone as a route guide?

    Thanks

    Harri

    Hi.
Thank you so much for this.
My daughter and I are going to cycle rom London to Paris later this year, probabaly August time and intend to do it unsupported. Could you use this route on a road bike. I have one but we haven’t purchased my daughters bike yet but are looking at road bikes. If so what tyres would you recommend for the woodland sections.
    Regards
    Nick

Hi, I’ve only ever done it on a road bike, using Continental GP4000 25mm tyres, without any issues. In August that should be fine.

Thanks in advance of our trip. This site is fantastic. What a lot of hard work you’ve put in,
And I don’t just mean pedaling! Thanks for the advice about using the gpx files, it does seem to make things much easier. (PS.I think it’s “travel log Lewes”, not Lewis but otherwise the attention to detail is great!)

Hi Kev Awesome Article loved it. Me and sme of my friend are doing L2P bike ride next month and we were thinking of using our phone for map but i thinking to use you map as a back up just in case our phone gave up on us. I tried to down load it but it is not opening. Can you give us the simple format of your route all way to the PAris which we can use. Thanks

Hi Sharan, what are you trying to download? A GPX file? Have you read the How to Navigate page? Have you downloaded maps.me?

Hi, Do you think this route would be suitable and safe to run? I’m planning to run from London to Paris in August and the majority of the sites I’ve found only have cycling routes and the ones with walking routes don’t have the downloadable GPX files.
Appreciate any advice, just don’t want to be running on really busy roads or roads with no pavement for a long time.
    Thanks!

Hi Mike, I think with some adjustments it might be okay. I think the biggest issue is day one

    Hello.
I am taking a group of cyclists to Paris this May. All are between 66 and 74. I am planning on following your trip. Firstly, thank you for putting so much detail on your site.
My questions is a technical one, when I try to look at the GPX file, I will use a Garmin, what appears is what appears to be the numerical formula for the route, ie a series of numbers. Certainly not something I can download. Am I making a mistake or does the file need tweaking to end up on a Garmin Edge? I will also be taking paper just in case!
Thanks in advance for you reply.
